Gentle Thunder

I can hear it.....the gentle roll of thunder in the distance.
When I was a child, the sound of an approaching storm caused fear in my soul. I knew that something was coming. Something dreadful.
It's different now. Watching the clouds roll, and dip...changing form as the wind pushes them along brings a feeling of anticipation of what's to come. It was still calm...before the storm. But I knew that something was coming.
I watched as the dark clouds advanced this morning... over taking the bright sky. Knowing that the sun was still there...above it all.
I knew, as the thunder became louder, and the clouds let go of the droplets of water, that the storm was coming ever closer.
But there was no fear...no dread.
As the tree tops began to sway, and the water began to move, I heard a voice.  Deep down in my spirit. So quiet, I almost missed it....this too shall pass.
Sometimes the storms of life come over us with a vegeance...the circumstances seem to boil and churn, causing fear and confusion.
Leaving us in the darkness, and furry of the impending doom.
Then....in the midst of it all....you hear....be still, and know that I am God.
HIS comfort pours over us like the rain. We can endure the storm, and know that
joy comes in the morning.
There might be debris from the storm, but we are still standing..
We can look up, and realize that the Son is still above the clouds.
He never leaves us, nor forsakes us. He is always there....riding out the storm with us.
Thinking of Kathy and Dave at Sweet Up North Mornings.
In remembrance of my late husband...our 37th anniversary would have been this month.

  1. Oh, Debbie- I am just checking in from work...shhhh...I needed to hear this on this particular morning. There are storm clouds on the horizon at work and no one is quite sure which way the wind is going to blow us. It is going to mean some major changes for me-one way or the other. I can choose to meet the storm head on with my head raised to face it or huddle under a "shelter" of safety that I create. I realize that I need to move bravely forward. Thanks-I believe God puts people in front of us to tell us when we need to hear...just when we need it! Hugs to you my sweet, ruffled-sheet friend-xxoo-Diana

  3. I would like to be there on the lake--things are constantly changing in the sky and views on a body of water!! I am so thankful for such beauty in this world . We have been having some good storms too. One knocked one of our air handlers out and we have been waiting 2 weeks for the part (in the mid nineties here). I am very thankful that we have more than one air handler! I didn't realize you had lost a husband. I think that has to be one of the hardest things to face in this life.

  4. Morning Debbie,
I have a list of things that I will miss that are earthly when I get to Heaven and storm clouds are one of them. I have always wondered if there will be the stiff kind of violent wind that I love so well here. I have always pictured Christ standing behind me with his arms around me anytime a storm comes my way. I hope there is rain... I like standing in the rain...I like it running down the windows...and blurring the colors together.
I love you photos this morning. If we are lucky, we will have some rain tomorrow.
I can't imagine my life without my husband. I am sorry you had to part with yours so young. I'm sure he's been watching over you all this time. Love never dies...never.
Have a peaceful day...amid the rumblings- Tete

  9. South Carolina had quite the storm today, it was dark, but the marsh grass looked beautiful, the thunder rumbled and the lighting struck from the distance. . it wasn't scary though, it made me want to snuggle up with someone and watch it go by..

  11. What a beautiful post!! It was what I needed to read as my daughter and son-in-law are having a touch time with his mom falling and breaking her neck, nose, and many facial bones. Yes, God is right there with all of them as they go through this difficult time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and heart with all of us.
    hugs,
    ~Cindy~

  13. Sweet sis....I just happened to check your blog today, and your words soothed my soul. Hubby and I had a slight falling out today, so I'm sad and teary right now. Your words, inspired by the Holy Spirit, are what I needed to hear. "Be still and know that I am God". Thank you, sweetie.

And I lift you up today as you struggle with the sweet memories that you hold dear. Wish you were right here so I could give you a big hug....

Stop by my blog Monday morning. I'm sending you something.... :) xoxo

  14. What a beautiful post Debbie. I don't ever remember being afraid of thunderstorms. My dad loved them and used to take me out to a sheltered place to watch them come in.

I still love to sit out on my front deck and watch them roll in. I'll sit there until the first fat raindrops start to fall, then head inside to watch from the windows. There's just something so awe inspiring about them.

Imagine a God so completely powerful and in control, that he created the magic of thunder and lightening. A heavenly fireworks display.

I too was unaware that you were once widowed. I am sorry for your loss. I almost lost my husband to a heart attack at the age of 43. It was a very frightening thing...but God was there too, and gave me a peace that passes understanding.

God bless you and fill you with peace tonight Debbie.

  15. Debbie....
    Sweet girl...
My heart sings that your Joy comes from the Lord.
He has blessed your life beyond measure, and you have blessed mine.
I love a good storm, always have....
It reminds me how powerful God is.
Even though we are in the middle of the biggest storm of our lives...we feel the gentel touch everyday.
Knowing you and seeing the Hand of God in your life eases the pain for us.
Thank You for this precious post,

  16. Debbie, What an insiteful post & beautiful pics! I loved the part that said, there may be debris, but we are still standing. A friend of mine once said "we may fall flat on our face, but if we know the Lord, we will never fall overboard"
I Love a good storm outside, love to sit on the porch & watch it roll in. : )
    You are a Blessing!!!
Hope you are enjoying a nice weekend!

  17. Debbie-you moved me this morning(as often Tete does) with your words of faith. I have it-but sometimes we forget in the midst of hard times. I so love to read your post-they're powerful and a testimony to God and to the great woman I know you are! God Bless you and the plans he has for you in the midst of any storm. As we continue to learn more about you-sorry to hear about your loss.
